(Native Press – Behchoko, NT – January 23, 2026) – A program in Behchoko that checked the wastewater found fentanyl and other drugs, which scared the leaders of the town.

Traces of drugs like fentanyl, sedatives, and stimulants were found in the community’s waste water.
Chief Bertha Rabesca Zoe said that the results “really opened people’s eyes.”

The checking is part of Health Canada’s National Wastewater Drug Surveillance program, which is meant to deal with the drug problem.

Rabesca Zoe stressed the need for drug task teams and for people to know about the dangers of drugs.
