(Native Press – Winnipeg, MB) – Following a power outage that severely damaged the water treatment facility and plumbing infrastructure, approximately 4,000 members of the Pimicikamak Cree Nation in Manitoba were evacuated, with hundreds of homes sustaining damage.

The outage began when a power line snapped, freezing pipes in extreme temperatures.

Chief David Monias claimed that leaks have damaged 200 homes and could worsen as pipes thaw.

He’s requested help from Prairie plumbers and engineers, predicting $44 million in repairs.

Officials are developing a recovery strategy as some households remain evacuated owing to safety concerns over uninhabitable conditions and infrastructural issues.
