(Native Press – Kashechewan FN, ON – January 8, 2026) – Kashechewan First Nation is a rural community in northern Ontario.

Angry people are making plans to leave the whole community because the water treatment system has broken down, leaving people without clean water.

When the plant stopped working, there was a local disaster, and later sewage problems made things even worse.

Leaders in the community asked the military to help with evacuations to nearby towns, and first flights were set up for residents who were most at risk.

Even though they are getting help, the locals want all 2,300 people to leave the area.

A sewage backup at the neighbourhood clinic during an influenza outbreak makes things even harder.

The water plant has started to be fixed, but long-running talks about moving the community to a safer place are still going on without any clear progress.

The situation shows that the government has been doing nothing for years, which is hurting the health and safety of the community.
