(Native Press – Yellowknife, NT – January 23, 2026) The NWT government will adopt May 2025 recommendations for public service AI deployment rather than creating a new policy.
These principles offer explicit criteria for controlling generative AI, protecting data, and monitoring AI programs. Experts worry about risks and shortcomings due to imprecise policies and lack of duties.
The Department of Finance offers GNWT staff an “AI Hub” for training. Privacy dangers, accuracy, and lack of professional control are concerns in AI tool pilot programs.
The use of AI for culturally sensitive tasks and environmental repercussions are other concerns.
Yellowknife and Aurora College are both creating AI rules, while the Law Society established AI compliance criteria for lawyers.
