(Yellowknife, NT – November 26, 2025 ) – Dene Nation and Treaty 8 Chiefs jointly opposed Bill 7: The 2025 Alberta Water Amendment Act in a statement released on Wednesday.

This bill aims to revise the Water Act, enabling “low-risk” inter-basin transfers and expanding ministerial powers.

The Dene and Treaty 8 peoples have highlighted their historical stewardship of the land and assert that increased industrial activity and water transfers threaten the health of local ecosystems.

They urge all Canadians to oppose Bill 7 and protect the Mackenzie Water Basin.

Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the impact of treated Alberta oil sands tailings on the Northwest Territories’ ecosystem, particularly given their exclusion from environmental assessments affecting traditional lands.
